The Drip

If you’re craving a slice of nature and serenity, The Drip Gorge and Munghorn Gap Nature Reserve are two of the Mudgee region’s most breathtaking outdoor destinations — and both are just a short, scenic drive from Mudgee Holiday Park. Known for their towering sandstone cliffs, cool river walks and ancient Aboriginal heritage, these natural treasures showcase the untamed beauty of Central West NSW.

The Drip Gorge – Nature’s Hidden Oasis

Located about 40 minutes north of Mudgee, The Drip Gorge is one of the area’s most photographed natural wonders — a tranquil sandstone gorge carved by the Goulburn River over millions of years. The highlight of the 1.5 km walking track is “The Drip” itself: a spectacular rock overhang where water seeps and drips year-round, even through dry spells.

The track winds through shady bushland, following the riverbank with plenty of photo opportunities along the way. You’ll spot native ferns, towering rock formations, and maybe even a wallaby or two. It’s an easy walk, making it a great outing for families, couples, or anyone wanting to connect with nature without venturing too far off the beaten path.

Be sure to pack your swimmers in the warmer months — there are peaceful rock pools perfect for a refreshing dip after your walk.

Munghorn Gap Nature Reserve – Where Nature and History Meet

Just 25 minutes from Mudgee, Munghorn Gap Nature Reserve offers another captivating bush escape. It’s one of the oldest nature reserves in New South Wales and home to an incredible diversity of flora and fauna. Birdwatchers will love spotting wedge-tailed eagles and glossy black cockatoos soaring above the sandstone ridges, while keen hikers can explore the walking trails that lead through eucalypt forests and rugged escarpments.

This reserve also holds deep cultural significance for the Wiradjuri people. Rock shelters and ancient art sites found throughout the area stand as a timeless reminder of their connection to the land. A quiet walk here offers both natural beauty and a sense of history that enriches the experience.

Both The Drip and Munghorn Gap are managed by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. Bring sturdy shoes, water, and your camera — and allow half a day to explore each site fully.
